Peptide Storage and Handling: Stability from Delivery to Final Draw
Peptide stability is largely manageable if a small set of storage rules is followed. Those rules preserve research material at every stage: in transit, on the shelf, and after reconstitution.
Lyophilized peptides (as shipped)
Freeze-dried peptides are highly stable when sealed in their original vials and kept refrigerated at 2–8°C; most remain within specification for 24 months or longer. Three factors determine that stability:
- Temperature: Refrigeration is the standard; long-term archival storage is often done at -20°C. Short excursions at room temperature, including several days in transit, do not measurably affect a sealed lyophilized vial. This is why peptides ship safely without cold packs in most conditions.
- Moisture: Moisture is the main threat to freeze-dried material. Keep vials sealed until use; if a vial has been refrigerated, let it warm to room temperature before opening so condensation doesn't form on the powder.
- Light: UV exposure degrades several amino-acid residues (tryptophan and methionine especially). Store vials in their box.
Reconstituted peptides
Once a peptide is in solution, its stability declines faster:
- Always store at 2–8°C. Room temperature storage cuts usable life from weeks to days.
- With bacteriostatic water, plan around a 30-day working window. With plain sterile water, treat the vial as single-session.
- Never freeze a reconstituted vial. Freeze-thaw cycles shear peptide bonds and cause aggregation you can't see until results drift.
- Swab the septum before every draw; the preservative handles microbes, not particulates or cross-contamination.
Reading the signs of degradation
A properly reconstituted peptide appears as a clear, colorless solution. Discard a vial that shows cloudiness that doesn't clear, visible particulates or fibers, color change, or any microbial haze. Degradation is not always visible, so validated storage windows, rather than appearance, should determine when a vial is retired.
Transit and receiving
Move peptides to refrigeration promptly on delivery. A warm package alone is not cause for concern because sealed lyophilized vials tolerate transit heat well. Check that the vial seals are intact and that the batch IDs match your paperwork. Every vial we ship carries a batch ID traceable to its published certificates.
