"How long does it last after reconstitution?" is a recurring question in practical peptide work. The answer depends on the compound, although a few predictable variables determine the window. The table below gives practical planning figures for laboratory work.

Handling practices that affect the window

  1. Refrigerate immediately and always. Every day at room temperature causes a disproportionate loss of stability; the rate roughly doubles per 10°C.
  2. Never freeze reconstituted solution. One freeze-thaw cycle can aggregate more material than weeks of proper storage.
  3. Reconstitute gently. Degradation starts at mixing, and foam from shaking causes day-zero damage (see technique guide).
  4. Date the vial at first puncture. The 30-day preservative window runs from that day, not from when the powder arrived.
  5. Split large protocols. For a study requiring six weeks of material, reconstituting two vials three weeks apart is preferable to stretching one vial past its window.

When to retire a vial early

Retire a vial if cloudiness does not clear, particulates or fibers appear, the color changes, or there is any doubt about cold-chain custody. Degradation is not always visible; drifting assay results with an old vial are also a stability signal.
