What BPC-157 is

BPC-157 ("Body Protection Compound") is a synthetic pentadecapeptide of fifteen amino acids with a molecular weight of ~1419 Da. Its sequence is derived from a partial segment of a protective protein identified in human gastric juice. Its stability in acidic environments is unusual for a peptide and helped make it a favored tool compound in gastrointestinal research. It is not an approved drug in any jurisdiction; all material sold as BPC-157 is research-grade chemical synthesis.

The main research threads

Soft-tissue and musculoskeletal models

The largest body of work comes from rodent studies of tendon, ligament and muscle injury. Across transection and crush models, investigators have reported accelerated fibroblast migration and outgrowth, improved collagen organization, and faster functional recovery in treated animals versus controls. In vitro work with tendon fibroblasts suggests involvement of the FAK–paxillin pathway in the migration effect.

Gastrointestinal protection

BPC-157 was first studied in gastrointestinal research. Rodent studies have examined protection of gastric and intestinal mucosa against NSAID-induced and alcohol-induced lesions, anastomosis healing, and models of inflammatory bowel injury. This remains the most extensively replicated area of the literature.

Angiogenesis and the nitric-oxide system

Several groups have reported increased VEGF expression and capillary formation in injury models, along with interactions with the NO pathway. These effects may underlie the healing observations above rather than being separate phenomena.

Practical notes for the laboratory

Although BPC-157 dissolves readily in bacteriostatic water and is notably stable for a peptide, standard practice still applies: refrigerate after reconstitution, protect from light, and confirm identity and purity against the batch certificate of analysis.
